FAQ
how did instant space start?

betsy saw an overwhelming need for a service that could provide design on a room-at-a-time basis.  she was meeting with many potential clients who desired and appreciated the burnham design aesthetic but had a limited budget, time frame, or the desire to execute the design of their room(s) themselves.  when one of her existing clients asked her to do a nursery after the rest of their house was completed, she asked them to be her test box…and instant/space was born.

who does the design?

each job is assigned to a project manager who works closely with betsy and together they put together your palette and furniture plan and select each piece for your room.

how do you get to know each client if you’ve never met them?

the more information a potential client sends us, the more we get to know their needs, tastes, and challenges for their room. in addition to measurements of the space and a completed questionnaire, we welcome tear sheets from magazines and the internet, photos of other rooms in your home, swatches of fabrics and colors you love…anything that will tell us more about you.

how much communication is there between you and the client during the design process?

once we receive the materials you send us, we want to completely understand the function and design goals of your project before we begin work, so communication is key. sometimes we’ll call you to go over everything but in general we’ll communicate via email. during the design process, we’ll communicate with you on an as-needed basis.

can you incorporate some of my existing furniture?

we always do our best to incorporate a client’s treasured piece.  we will need images and measurements, and if it’s an upholstered piece and you have access to the fabric that was used, a swatch of the fabric.  we may also suggest a new fabric if the original doesn’t work with the new scheme.

when should i submit payment?

at the beginning of the process.  we cannot begin work on your room(s) until we’ve received payment in full.

when will i receive my design?

a typical instant/space project takes six weeks to complete.
if you have ordered multiple rooms, we may need a couple of extra weeks to complete the project.  we do our best to finish every design in a timely fashion; however, we never want to rush a design.  we’ll be up front with you if we have many orders to complete and the lead time will be longer.

if i have questions about my instant/space design after i’ve received it, will someone help me?

if you have questions about your design, please let us know.  we want you to be happy, and we will always do our best to help you fully understand everything we’ve sent.

do you ever continue to work with an instant/space client after they’ve received their box?

sometimes clients want additional help with shopping and purchasing.  we’re happy to help you through this part of the process, and are available on an hourly basis.

have you ever had an unhappy client?

we’ve had nothing but positive feedback since the program began.  the beauty of instant space is that you’re in charge of how much or how little of our design you use.

what is instant/space plus?

many clients want to make their box more custom by adding "trade only" fabrics and furniture pieces to their design plan. we'll happily accommodate this request. trade only items are billed at net price plus 25% commission and purchasing is done through the burnham design office.
